Universal Resorts announce spa re-branding

Universal Resorts unveils “The Spa” at their five-star island resorts, Kurumba, Velassaru and Baros, in the Maldives. Introducing new Signature Treatments made from local ingredients, this new concept of the spa experience creates an immersive environment where guests can indulge in revitalizing rituals whilst gaining a greater appreciation for the nature and traditions of the Maldives.

The new range of options at The Spa includes local therapies, signature treatments and cleansing rituals; these are conducted using fresh ingredients, many of which are produced by Maldivian island communities supported by Universal Resorts Corporate Social Responsibility Programmes. Maldivians are particularly attuned to the nourishing properties of the coconut and often use the oil, nectar, milk and water of this versatile fruit in their practices - even their massage tools are fashioned from coconut husks. At The Spa, such natural bounties are spliced with traditional customs to conjure up sensations of deep natural pleasure.

Each of the resorts’ spas offers a uniquely serene ambiance in harmony with the surrounding island and has a range of treatments which emphasizes a particular ingredient local to the atolls, be it coconut oil, coconut nectar or ghandakholi leaf.

Surrounded by the waters of a soothing reflection pond and with eight treatment rooms, a yoga pavilion, hydrotherapy pool, relaxation lounge and aroma steam room, The Spa at Kurumba is an idyllic sanctuary amidst the coconut groves which give the island its name. Aptly, the Signature Experience of the Spa menu at Kurumba focuses on virgin coconut oil and comprises of a huni scrub with dried coconut and essential oils, an aloe vera wrap, coconut oil Aroma Massage, and a coco-smoothie drink.

The recently refurbished Spa at Baros is situated close to the beach and is entered via an ornately carved doorway opening onto the stepping stones of an ornamental pool. Four discrete treatment rooms, each with a dressing room, shower, outdoor bath and shower and private steam room, are equipped with dual treatment beds allowing couples to share their spa experience. A sanctum of tranquility, the spa itself is fringed with verdant tropical gardens, mirroring the lush vegetation for which the island is renowned. The spa Signature Experience at Baros is centered on rich coconut nectar and comprises of a nectar scrub, nectar wrap, an Aroma Massage and a delicious Nectar Tonic Drink - which is a warm coconut toddy with lemon and fresh mint leaves.

At Velassaru, the ten treatment rooms, pool and yoga pavilion at The Spa are, like many of the villas on the resort, set on stilts over a clear lagoon - each offering a scenic, uninterrupted view of the Indian Ocean. Here, the Signature Experience is inspired by the ghandakholi (sweet basil) leaf; a sandy scrub with aloe vera and ghandakholi essential oil is followed by a ghandakholi wrap, Aroma Massage and an invigorating aloe vera, ghandakholi and coconut toddy drink.

Each signature experience provides a just sample of The Spas’ diverse full menu, which consist of a variety of wraps, facials, exfoliations, pedicures, manicures, specially designed Rituals for Both him and her, separate or together and yoga sessions. They employ massage techniques from around the world, such as Balinese, Swedish and Thai. The Spa welcomes every guest as an individual and highly qualified staffs are always on-hand to help create bespoke treatments for individual needs and indulgences.

The Spa from Universal Resorts represents unprecedented relaxation, showcasing time-honored craft and rituals in a rejuvenating and natural experience of the Maldives.
