The real face of the Maldives is not the luxurious island resorts but Male’, the uninteresting but strange capital

The Maldives is a chugging boat overcoming waves—big and small. This is usually the general impression one can get of a country synonymous to climate change.

The country is so vulnerable yet trying to be strong in the midst of climate change doomsday that in less than 100 years, the atolls of Maldives will completely disappear from the map unless adaptation and mitigation measures will be effectively enforced.

But before the climate change became a growing concern, the Maldives was more popularly known and still is today as the playground of the rich and famous. Hollywood superstars and billionaires take their luxurious holidays (away from the paparazzi) in one of the more than 90 exclusive island resorts in the Indian Ocean. This archipelagic nation competes with the Bahamas or the Mediterranean and more five-star resorts are trying to plant their presence here.  Read Original
